Equity Week originated in Oakland through a public awareness campaign funded by the City of Oakland's Equity Program with support from the Governor's Office of Business and Economic Development (GO-Biz) grant from the Bureau of Cannabis Control. The campaign was created to address a critical challenge: consumers didn't know who equity-owned cannabis businesses were or where to find their products. Equity Week was designed to celebrate and increase visibility for equity business owners impacted by the War on Drugs, helping them connect with customers and grow their enterprises.
This inaugural event brought together the community to shop, learn, and connect while promoting social justice in the cannabis industry. The first Equity Week in Oakland set the foundation for what would become a movement. Over five days, the Oakland community came together to support equity-owned businesses through food, shopping, events, and community gatherings that celebrated their
resilience and entrepreneurship.
Equity Week was born from visionary buyers, brands, and cannabis dispensary owners having a desire to connect and do business with entrepreneurs negatively impacted by the War on Drugs. This week, not only celebrated Oakland's participating equity businesses but also raised consumer awareness to support real, local cannabis business owners. From this example, Make Green Go continues to uplift cannabis communities by expanding Equity Week to other cities, using it as a proven success model.
